At last, cricketer Sharad Vesawkar becomes a Nepali citizen after he was handed the citizenship card at the Kathmandu District Administration Office on Sunday.
Vesawkar, until now did not exist for Nepal expect in the cricket record books, where his runs have won many a matches for the country in his 13-year long career.
Despite being born to a Nepali mother, Vesawkar had been denied the citizenship for the fact that he was born in UAE to an Indian father. “I am happy to finally become a citizen of a country I call home,” said, Vesawkar, 24, who resides with his mother at Ratopul.
Until now he had been using the minor passport he had acquired while playing for the age-group tournaments which was about to expire at the end of this month. The arrival of the citizenship has also saved his cricketing career due to restriction on travelling after the expiry of his current minor passport.
“I am extremely delighted. With the ICC Twenty20 World Cup Qualifiers looming ahead in November and the passport about to expire we were worried about his career. Now he can fully concentrate on his cricket and a great burden has been lifted off his shoulder,” Vesawkar’s mother Himali told the Post.
Vesawkar’s citizenship application had been pending in the Home Ministry for almost a decade now. The issue stirred up after Nepal’s victory in the ICC WCL Division 3 and ended with the ministry’s decision on Friday.
He is one of the four batsmen to score a century for Nepal. He had scored 105 not out against Fiji in 2005 in the tournament which he almost missed after initially being dropped.
Vesawkar, had first represented Nepal in the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) U-15 Asia Cup which was held in 2002 in UAE, where he had scored a century against Qatar. His success in the age group continued as he scored two half centuries in the U-19 matches.
The lanky batsman went on to have a dream debut for the senior side as he scored unbeaten half-century. He was also part of the U-19 team that won the plate championship in New Zealand. '
