10 dead in Dolakha bus accident

Ten people were killed and over two dozen injured when a bus met with an accident in Dolakha on Friday. The reserved bus was carrying passengers returning to their home to celebrate Dashain.

The ill-fated bus (Ba 2 Kha 9200) fell some 300 meters down the road at Lakuri Daanda- 9, Jhingane along Pushpalal Highway, at around 3 this afternoon.

According to Dolakha Police Chief Surya Prasad Kafle, nine passengers died on the spot while a child breathed his last during treatment at Charikot Community Hospital.

Charikot-based Kalinchwok Yuwa Club had reserved the bus for those who wanted to come home from Kathmandu to celebrate Dashain.

There were 40 passengers traveling in the bus. Some of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

The accident site lies some 19 km away from the district headquarters, Charikot. The police and locals brought the rescued injured passengers to Thso-Rolpa Hospital and Charikot Community Hospital for further treatment.

Jiah Khan's mother Rabbiya Khan has released photographs of her daughter's dead body to support her charge that Jiah was  murdered.

Jiah's mother has demanded CBI inquiry and filed a fresh petition in the Bombay High Court.

According to Rabbiya, the investigation was not done properly, alleging that her daughter’s death is a murder case and not a suicide.

25-year-old Jiah Khan, who made her debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd, was found hanging from the ceiling at her residence in June earlier this year.

Doc faces sexual assault charge

Police on Sunday arrested a doctor of the Biratnagar-based Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital on charges of sexual assault.

Relatives of a patient admitted at the hospital said Dr Sandip Jaisawal Chaudhary sexually harassed her while applying douche in her anus before surgery.

They claimed the doctor took her into a cabin, stripped off her clothes and assaulted her sexually.

The 38-year-old Dalit woman was admitted at the hospital on Saturday after she was diagnosed with gallstone.

DSP Dipak Pokharel said Dr Chaudhary was detained from the hospital based on a complaint lodged by the victim. An investigation is getting underway, he said.

Hospita’s Public Relations Officer Narayan Dahal said that the management suspended the accused doctor soon after the matter was brought to light.

Relatives of the victim have demanded that strong punishment be taken against the accused.

Southasia film fest ends on high note

Algorithms, a documentary directed by Ian McDonald about three blind chess players in India, won the Ram Bahadur Tamang Best Film trophy at the 9th Film Southasia (FSA) festival that concluded on Sunday in Kathmandu.

Chair of the FSA jury, Sadanand Menon, an art critic from Chennai said the film deserved the trophy for taking the audience into an extraordinary world of protagonists. The film is produced by Geetha J.

The QFX jury awards went to Deepa Dhanraj-directed Invoking Justice, a film which, Menon, said, showed optimism in midst of grimness surrounding women issues in India and the rest of South Asia. The film shows Muslim women in Tamil Nadu challenging the traditional male-only Islamic judicial council, or Jamaat, by forming their own.

A film from Bangladesh, Are You Listening, was another recipient of QFX jury awards. The documentary directed by Kamar Ahmed Simon follows struggles of a family after a cyclone hits coastal Bangladesh in 2009.

Although the film from Bangladesh is Simon’s debut feature, Tareque Masud Award for Best Debut film went to a film from Myanmar, No 62 Pansodan Street, directed by Cho Pyone. This short film (13 minutes long) is about a family in a colonial building in Yangon.

The newly-created Unicef Nepal award for the best film on children issues went to Char ... No Man’s Island from Bangladesh. The film directed by Sourav Sarangi follows a 14-year-old boy caught in a no man’s island in the Padma River, the border between India and Bangladesh, and in the much larger world of cross-border smuggling.

Sri Lankan movie No Fire Zone, which was banned from public viewing, received a special mention from the jury. Menon applauded the film for its investigative rigour, activism and political importance, urging the public to watch it to bring Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapakse to trial for the atrocities committed during the last few months of the Lankan civil war.

4 killed, over 60 injured as passenger bus meets with accident in Ramechhap

Four people were killed and more than sixty injured when a passenger bus met with an accident at Aitabare Bheer of Ramechhap VDC-3 in the district on Saturday evening.

Amongst the injured , condition of six passengers is said to be critical. It has been reported that the ill-fated bus (Na 1 Kha 7782) on its way to Deurali from Manthali, the district headquarters, slipped and lost its control, plummeting some 60 meters down the road. 

The incident site is 6 kilometers away from Manthali.

Police said that the accident might have occurred as the road was slippery because of rain.

Rape: An insult, among other offenses

Last night, my sister called me up and informed in a horrified voice that she was stuck in a jam while returning home. She had taken a public vehicle and it was already around 8 o’clock in the evening. We were never worried like that before. To our relief, she reached home safely after sometime.

Today, this kind of fear is not new in many families due to the rape cases in Nepal and elsewhere constantly making headlines. 

Rape is not external to our society; rapists don’t constitute a different section in our society. They are very much a part of our patriarchal society where women have been dominated in almost all sectors. We live in a society where what women wear and who she hangs out with are held accountable for rape. The rapists are always given a clean chit, and people always find a fault in the ‘character’ of the raped women. “She provoked the rapists,” they will say.

Out of the many rape cases that made headlines in recent times, the most dreadful one was the Delhi gang rape in India where a female physiotherapy student was beaten and gang-raped by six men. Later, the victim died while undergoing treatment in Singapore.

In a similar incident, a migrant worker was raped brutally by a policeman in Kathmandu. She was returning home from Saudi Arabia. Immigration officials kept her in detention overnight on the charge of her fake passport. It is reported that one of the immigration officials took her to a motel where she was robbed and raped repeatedly.

The victim gathered enough courage to file a case against it. Public uproar began in social media demanding harsh punishment for the culprit. A campaign named “Occupy Baluwatar” was launched to pressurize the government. After that, several reports of cases where women were burnt, raped and assaulted came into limelight.

Unfortunately, in spite of the national uproar against rape in the country, many parents still prefer to kill their daughters than fight for their justice. They value their social prestige more than the self-esteem of their daughters. Sometimes, this fear leads the victims to commit suicide while their rapists remain free and unpunished. There are many cases where women are assaulted repeatedly but they go unreported due to fear.

On the other hand, public transport is one of the places where sexual assaults frequently take place. Once, I was traveling in a public vehicle where there was a young girl wearing a skirt, probably her college uniform, seated next to a man in his 40s. I could notice that the man was constantly staring at the girl’s legs. It was a really disgusting look, and in a way, he was raping the girl through his eyes. After sometime, he slowly raised his hands to touch the girl. But the girl understood what was going on, so she quickly stood up and raised her voice. When other passengers protested, the man got off from the bus.

Similarly, marital rapes are rampant. Research reveals that victims of marital/partner rape suffer longer-lasting traumas than victims of rape by strangers. A friend recently shared with me that her husband wants to have sex with her even when she is not well. He threatens her to leave her if she refuses. She told me that she can neither leave him due to the fear of social prestige nor can she live happily with him. “I can only compromise,” she told me.



I don’t know why people don’t understand that every human being has equal rights. Like I mentioned earlier, some people even argue that women should stop wearing dresses that ‘sexually provoke’ men. Some states in India even proposed to ban skirts.

But the problem is not in a girl’s dress or her lifestyle, but in attitude. Everyone has the right to choose their way of living, and women are no exceptions. I believe that while the government should enforce strong laws to punish assaulters, women should also be bold enough to raise their voice. Otherwise, these kinds of violence will go on increasing. Whether he is your husband, boyfriend or anyone, but if you feel you are assaulted, don’t remain silent but protest. I don’t think this will stop such crimes altogether but this will definitely help reduce such offences.

And parents, don’t teach your daughters to cover up, just teach your sons not to rape. This is your duty.

Dashain begins, Ghatasthapana today

Hindu people across the country have been observing Ghatasthapana , the first day of Dashain festival, on Saturday by sowing seeds of Jamara (sacred plants) at home and temples.

Dashain , the greatest festival of Nepali Hindu people, is celebrated by worshipping Hindu deity Durga, the goddess of power.

On this day, people clean up their houses early in the morning and prepare for Ghatasthapana , which literally means the placing of the pot. 'Ghata' means pot and 'Sthapana' refers to placing. 

Hindu god Ganesh is also worshiped on the day and Kalasha (vessel full of holy water) and Diyo (oil-fed lamp) are placed before reading holy scriptures. Jamara includes seeds of barley, rice, corn and wheat which are planted on a leaf plate traditionally known as Tapari and Bohta.

Jamara is kept as the blessings of goddess Durga on the 10th day of Bijaya Dashami by Hindu Nepalis worldwide. Usually the head member of the family plants Jamara after purifying himself/herself by taking a holy bath and wearing clean clothes.

Devotees also visit various 'Shakti Peeths' (power centres) of Durga to receive her blessings. Guheshwori, Bhadrakali, Shobha Bhagawati, Mahangkal, Naradevi, Indrayani, Kalikasthan, Maiti Devi and Sankata are knows as Shakti Peeths inside Kathmandu Valley.

Jamara is offered as blessings by elders to younger ones on the 10th day. The day is known as Tika. Offering of Tika and Jamara ritual continues for five days till Purnima. 

On the auspicious occasion of Ghatasthapana and till Navaratri (nine nights), people chant Bhajan (devotional songs) at home and in Shakti Peeths.

All nine nights are named according to Hindu scriptures and after the nine incarnations of Durga.

Gatasthapana is worshiped as Shailaputri. The second day is called Bramhacharini, third as Chandra Ghante, fourth as Kushmande, fifth as Skndmate, sixth as Katyayani, seventh as Kalratri, eighth as Mahagauri and ninth as Siddhiratri. From the day onwards, people also recite and chant holy books Chandi and Durga Kabaj.

One of the interesting parts of the festival is also Malshree Dhun, also called the Dashain tune.

Maoist party cadres clash; 12 hurt

A clash between activists of the UCPN (Maoist) and the Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist on Thursday left 12 people injured in Khalanga, the district headquarters of Salyan.

The tension at the old bus park area ensued as the UCPN (Maoist) supporters, who were on their way to the District Election Office to file candidacy for the November election, encountered Baidya’s supporters while they were burning effigies of top leaders of the four major political parties.

Khalanga remained tense after the clash and the stampede among the party workers and local people that followed. Police used force to contain the situation and dispersed the mob in about 25 minutes.

Among the injured were state committee member of the UCPN (Maoist) Lokman Budhathoki, district in-charge of the CPN-Maoist Asal Chhetri and Baidya supporters Shyam Bhandari, Ganeshman Singh, Keshavraj Sharma and Bodhiram Bista. The CPN-Maoist said Bhandari was seriously injured in the clash.

Two of the injured are undergoing treatment in the District Hospital, while the others have already returned home.

Trees should be cut down for the ongoing road expansion only if absolutely necessary

When the Baburam Bhattarai-led government started demolishing buildings in order to expand roads in Kathmandu, there was both public acclaim and opprobrium. Many lauded the government for summoning the political will to undertake such a massive initiative. Many others were angry at what was perceived to be the indiscriminate destruction of private property. Later, the inhabitants of the Valley started to face serious problems as a result of the demolition. For many months, the government focused only on destroying buildings and much less on constructing roads. There was a lot of dust in the air and this increased respiratory illnesses among Valley residents. When it rained the roads became muddy, leaving many streets almost impassable. There were also complaints that the government wasn't paying enough attention to matters such as building sidewalks, drainage systems and planting trees. This, it was thought, would have tremendous environmental consequences.

Road construction began in certain key areas of the Kathmandu district. Over the past six months, roads were being expanded in many other parts of the city as well. It will take some time before the expansion process is complete. Only then will it become evident whether the entire process was a success or not. It is not immediately apparent

whether the roads being constructed are of good quality or not. In the meantime, however, some preliminary comments can be made. Many of the fears of those who opposed road expansion have not come to pass. The government, it appears, has been receptive to criticism. In many parts of the city, large sidewalks have been constructed, making access for pedestrians easy. It also appears that some attention is being paid to the construction of drains. A few months ago, when road construction was in its preliminary phases, massive rainfall led to flooding. More recently, however, there hasn't been any such problem.

The government is now planning to expand the Ring Road from Kalanki to Koteshwor with help from the Chinese government. Environmental activists have protested this plan, as it will lead to over a thousand trees along the road

being cut down. This is a major problem. Kathmandu city already suffers from a lack of greenery. The trees along the Ring Road contribute substantially to the city’s well-being. In response to protesters, the government has stated that it will plant five trees for every three that are chopped down. However, it will take time for the newly planted saplings to grow and in the meantime, the capital will suffer. The authorities thus need to ensure that they cut down trees only when absolutely necessary. Furthermore, there needs to be a long-term plan to ensure that the planted trees are properly taken care of in the years ahead.

30 dead in three months in Kathmandu Valley

30 people were killed in several road accidents in the past three months in the capital. 

Likewise, 31 persons were critically injured and 731 sustained minor injuries in the 975 road accidents during the period, according to information shared at a press conference organized by the Division Office of the Traffic Police on Thursday.

According to Chief of the Division Office, DIG Keshav Adhikari , a total sum of Rs.11 million has been raised from 11,550 persons from anti-drunken driving campaign. Also the traffic police have raised Rs. 48.7 million in revenue from 176,999 drivers for breaching traffic rules from June 15 to October 1.

During the period, the traffic police punched holes in 10,338 driving licenses for violating the traffic rules while action against 3,114 vehicles were taken for blowing pressure horns going against the traffic law.

Likewise, action have been taken against 1,220 public vehicles for not following the criteria for reservation seats, 64 for using black windscreen, and 332 taxi drivers for charging extra fare, said Deputy Inspector General of Police, Adhikari.

Death toll in sunk boat off Italy could top 200, dozens still missing: reports

ROME, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — The death toll from the sinking of a migrant boat off an Italian island carrying about 500 people could well top 200, according to local media reports.

The disaster took place on Thursday off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, when a fishing boat carrying about 500 African migrants caught fire and sank.

Italian authorities have previously put the death toll at 94, including several women and four small children.

But according to the ANSA news agency, divers have found around 100 more bodies under the wreck of the boat that was carrying them from Libya.

Dozens of others are still missing and unaccounted for.

The 20-meter vessel caught fire after the migrants, mainly from Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia according to media reports, set fire to a blanket after the ship started to take water in order to attract the attention of passing ships.

But the fire soon spread to the rest of the boat, and the ship capsided as migrants moved to avoid the fire.

“We decided to light a fire to get us notice. But the bridge was contaminated with oils, and in a few moments the boat was engulfed in flames,” one of the migrants was quoted as saying by Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Divers were still searching for possible survivors of the deadliest accidents over recent months in the Mediterranean Sea crossing that thousands of African migrants make every year.

So far, 155 people have been rescued.

The ANSA news agency said the Italian police had detained one of the survivors – a Tunisian national suspected of being the “human trafficker.”

Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta described the accident as a huge tragedy. He rushed to the scene with Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano.

Thousands of African migrants try the hazardous Mediterranean crossing to Italy every year. A recent study found some 6,200 migrants had died in southern Italian waters since 1994.

Padam Kunwar Slaps Prachanda Once Again Filing Candidacy in Kathmandu-10

3 Oct-Kathmandu: Padam Kunwar, the person who came into limelight after publicly slapping Puspakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ the chairperson of U-CPN Maoist, has filed his nomination for CA candidacy as independent candidate in the same constituency Kathmandu-1 where Prachanda is a candidate.

A resident of Baglung, Kunwar filed his candidacy on Thursday as an independent candidate from the constituency that also has Chairman Prachanda as a contender.

Kunwar emerging from the Election Office said he was not against any individual rather he filed nomination for making a constitution in the country.

Kunwar had released a video a few days ago saying he was contesting with Prachanda in Kathmandu-10 in the next CA adding he is sure to defeat Prachanda.

In the video that begins with a slogan ‘prachanda jaha uthchhan, padam teibata jitchhan meaning wherever Prachanda contests, Padam wins there, many people are shown saying they are willing to vote Padam instead of Prachanda.

25-year-old Padam Kunwar from Baglung is former cadre of Maoist. After slapping Prachanda, he had said that he intently slapped Prachanda to show his hatred to the leaders.

2 Killed in Ultralight Aircraft Crash in Pokhara

3 Oct-Pokhara: An ultra-light aircraft has crashed in Pokhara this morning killing 2 people on the board. Pilot Stephen Shrestha and an unidentified Chinese passenger died as the air-craft met with an accident at Shanti Stupa in Pumdi Bhumdi VDC, during the adventure flight.

The ultralight aircraft that crahsed because of bad weather is said to be belonging to Avia Club. Pilot Shrestha is also one of the directros of Avia Club.

The weather very bad in Pokhara today from early morning. People have questioned why the flight was allowed despite the bad weather. The genuine reason of the crash is yet to be known.

All the Ultralight Flights are canceled after the accident.

Paragliding and Ultralight flights are very popular among tourists in the tourist city Pokhara.

The latest crash is sure to have bad impact in adventure tourism in Pokhara.

02 October, Washington (PTI) : Men and women alter their voices when speaking to lovers versus friends and such variations can potentially be used to detect infidelity, scientists say.

“It’s not just that we change the sound of our voice, but that others can easily perceive those changes,” said Susan Hughes, associate professor of psychology Albright College, US.

The study looked at how individuals alter their voices, or engage in voice modulation, when speaking to romantic partners versus same-sex friends during brief telephone conversations.

Researchers recruited 24 callers who were newly in love and still in the so-called honeymoon period. Callers were asked to phone their romantic partners, as well as a close same-sex friend, and in both cases engage in a conversation asking specifically ‘how are you?’ and ‘what are you doing?’

Researchers then played the recordings to 80 independent raters who judged the samples for sexiness, pleasantness and degree of romantic interest. Raters were exposed to only one end of the conversation and, in some cases, for only 2 seconds.

Still, raters were able to correctly identify, with greater than chance accuracy, whether the caller was speaking to a friend or lover, leading researchers to believe that people will alter their voice to communicate their relationship status.

“Vocal samples directed toward romantic partners were rated as sounding more pleasant, sexier and reflecting greater romantic interest than those directed toward same-sex friends,” according to the study.

Researchers also performed a spectrogram analysis on the samples to examine pitch and found that both men and women tend to mimic or match the pitch of their romantic partners.

Women will use a lower pitch, while men will employ a higher one when speaking to their romantic partner.

According to the study, this effect ‘represents desire for affiliation and intimacy’ and is a “way to communicate affection and relational connection – ‘I am one with you.’”

Nepal, Dahal, Sitaula file their Nominations

03, October, Kathmandu : Senior leader of the CPN (UML), Madhav Kumar Nepal, has filed his nomination from Kathmandu Constituency No. 2 today for the upcoming election to the Constituent assembly (CA).

Talking to mediapersons after filing the nomination, Nepal said he filed his nomination to promulgate democratic constitution and expressed the determination they would fulfill the desire of the people for development, good-governance and change.

He also expressed the belief that the poll-opposing CPN-Maoist would not make any obstruction in the election.

Similarly, Chairman of the UCPN (Maoist) Pushpakamal Dahal has also filed his nomination from Kathmandu Constituency No. 10 for the forthcoming CA election.

Dahal reached the office of the Election Officer at New Baneshwor, and filed his nomination.

Talking to media persons after filing nomination, he said it was  the responsibility of all the Nepali people to make the CA election fixed for November 19 a success.

Dahal also urged all people to participate in the election and to make it free and fair.

Renu Dahal from Kathmandu -1, Lilamani Pokhrel from Kathmandu-2, Ganesh Prasad Regmi from Kathmandu-3, Nanda Kishor Pun from Kathmandu-4, Mahendra Shrestha from Kathmandu-5, Himal Sharma from Kathmandu-6, Hisila Yami from Kathmandu-7, Mukti Pradhan from Kathmandu-8, Devendra Poudel from Kathmandu-9 have also filed their nominations.

Chinese tourist, local pilot killed in Nepal plane crash

A small plane crashed into a hill in a tourist city in western Nepal on Thursday, killing the pilot and the only passenger, a Chinese tourist, a police official said. The ultra-light aircraft was flying over a lake in Pokhara when it slammed into the hill near a Buddhist monasterySurendra Bahadur Shah, a local police chief told AFP.
"Villagers told us about the crash at 9:30 am local time. The weather was bad, it was cloudy," he said.

The passenger, a 33-year-old Chinese tourist called Zun Liu, and the pilot, who also owned the plane, were both killed in the crash, he said.

Pokhara, 210 kilometres (130 miles) west of Kathmandu, is a popular tourist destination, offering paragliding, sightseeing and boating activities.

More than 5,00,000 tourists visit Nepal every year, mostly from neighbouring India and China, and tourism is one of the major contributors to the economy of the impoverished Himalayan nation.

The country has a poor road network and tourists, pilgrims and professional climbers often rely on the country's 16 domestic airlines to reach remote areas despite frequent air accidents owing to lax safety regulations.

In May, 21 people were injured, including eight Japanese tourists, when a small plane skidded off an airport in northern Nepal and plunged into a river.

A private helicopter also crashed in northwestern Nepal in June, killing one local passenger and seriously injuring Italian and Nepali pilots.

Ranchi, Oct 3 (PTI) RJD chief Lalu Prasad was today sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case that immediately disqualifies him as MP and will keep him out of elections for 11 years, raising questions over the leadership of his party ahead of Lok Sabha polls next year.

Suprabha Ghimire Quits NC

2 Oct-Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Suprabha Ghimire has announced to quit the party for belittling her contribution, self-esteem and existence.



‘I did not see the situation to remain in the party when its genuine objective of building just, dynamic, independent and equitable society was confined to slogan due to vested interests of some people’, she said in a press conference organized in the Capital on Wednesday.



She accused the party of being indifferent towards implementing the constitutional provision of ensuring minimum 33 per cent representation of women.



The party has limited the women’s right in the name of youth, Ghimire said adding that she would think whether to register independent candidacy or to establish another party but would work for women rights wherever she will be.



Leader Ghimire won the earlier CA election from Kathmandu constituency-4.



Likewise, disgruntled leaders of NC, Kapilvastu have collectively padlocked the party office putting ‘chair’ and ‘nameplate’ of district President.



They resorted to vandalism and arson expressing dissatisfaction for not providing them with ticket despite recommendations from region and district.



NC district leaders Attahar Kamal, Raju Aryal, Dirgha Narayan Pandey and Mangal Prasad Gupta came up with string protest challenging the decision of party parliamentary committee.



A protest rally was also taken out from Lawani to Taulihawa citing party did not adopt inclusive approach while selecting candidates.



It is learnt that NC leaders Deep Kumar Upadhya, Rajesh Acharya, Sudhakar Pandey, Surendra Raj Acharya and Birendra kumar Kanaudiya have received ticket to contest first-past-the-post election from Kapilvastu, constituency 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 respectively.

2 Oct-Chitwan: Vice President Parmanand Jha has said all state bodies including the government and Election Commission are ready to hold the election on November 19.

 

VP Jha who was here to inaugurate the Taipai Cultural Festival, in Chitwan, at a press meet organized in Bharatpur, said a lot of time was spent in trying to bring the CPN-Maoist and other parties to election but they were not in the mentality of coming to election.

Still the government is being flexible to make them participate and if they try to disrupt the election, the government cannot remain silent, he said.



No one can give an alternate to election, he said, adding the country would be taken to economic prosperity by drafting a new constitution.
