Six girls rescued

Police with the help of an NGO working against women trafficking have rescued six girls being trafficked to India . The girls, between 19 to 29 years of age, were rescued from a rented apartment of one Taradevi Gurung at Bhadrapur-8, where they were held captive. Police suspect that Taradevi’s brother Krishna brought the girls from Kathmandu to Taradevi’s house in order to traffic them to India .

The victims have been identified as Sita Danuwar, 28, of Sarlahi, 19-year-old Ambika Rokka of Dhading and 19-year-old Sushma Tamang, Sanchita Bisunkhe, 19, Anita Tamang, 20, and Pratima Tamang, 20, all from Sindhupalchowk. Ambika, one of the victims, said they were told beforehand that they would be sent to Dubai via Delhi for employment. The girls are said to have been doing ‘odd jobs’ in Kathmandu.

Police arrested Taradevi and her son Bal Bahadur in connection with the incident while Krishna is at large. District Police Office chief Sher Bahadur Basnet said Krishna was just freed jail after serving one-year term on the conviction of trafficking a girl. Police said they handed over Sita, one of the victims, to her parents and that Susma and Pratima will be handed over to their parents on Wednesday.
