Few weeks ago, our whole country “Nepal” and our beloved Nepalese citizens went outraged when the national Indian channel “Zee TV” went viral promoting their new serial called “Buddha” claiming that the Buddha was born in India. Not only, it caused lot of tension between two countries, it also brought colossal protests in social media as well as in streets around Nepal. I was also astounded to hear some of colleagues who argued that the birth-place issue is over-hyped as there was no territory when Buddha was born. Even our great attractive actress “Priyanka Karki” also blogged on social media professing that Nepal didn't exist when Buddha was born so the birthplace controversy needs to be ceased.
While I somewhat agree and value her opinion, I tend to delve deep into this issue and why it really matters to Nepalese all over the world. Buddhism is one of the most treasured religions of the world as it embraces love, peace and harmony among all human beings. While the world is suffering from hatred and involved in war due to the conflicts in religion, Buddhism promotes tranquility, serenity and forgiveness to everyone even those who have committed sin. Therefore, to have Buddha born in Nepal is not just a matter of pride but a symbol of fortitude to all the Nepalese citizens who are believed to have renowned for the hospitality and generosity all over the world.
Now, apart from pride, Buddhism and birthplace of Buddha also matters in economic perspective as well. First of all, Lumbini, Nepal- the birthplace of Buddha is esteemed as a UNESCO world heritage site of the world which not only publicizes our tiny country around the world but also promotes tourism bringing hundred thousands of dollars of revenue every year. Every year, More than 400,000 Buddhists and Non-Buddhists visit Lumbini, Nepal where the tourists’ nationality range from China, Japan to Australia and even United States. Because of the sacred four noble truths, Buddhism attracts not only Buddhists but also people from western countries who come to Nepal to pay homage to Lord Gautama Buddha. Many countries like Thailand, Germany, China etch have built numerous temples and monasteries all around Lumbini, Nepal to honor the birthplace of Buddha. Not only Buddhism and birthplace of Buddha has developed the economic and infrastructure of Lumbini, it also helps local small, medium and large hospitality and hotel business increasing the revenue of the country and the gross domestic product which is in dire need.
Big kudos to the Nepal Cable TV association, Nepal Cable TV association blocked the Indian channels following a protest call by a Maoist faction for 24 hours stating that “If we self-respecting Nepalis don’t oppose such naked Indian expansionism then it could threaten our national honor and dignity”. With huge respect, Nepal also will circulate a new 100-rupee note with an imprint, “Lumbini : The Birthplace of Lord Buddha.” in order to correct the record stating that Buddha was born in Nepal. Due to enormous pressure and protest, Zee TV finally corrected the error stating that it was a mistake. Actor of Buddha “Kabir Bedi” also apologized stating that Buddha was born in Nepal. Although we criticize the corrupt government for shriveling down the economy and mortifying the prosperity of our country, we should be grateful to the Nepal government this time for dwelling the truth and speaking against false claims. Last but not least, let's not hesitate to proclaim that "Buddha was born in Nepal not in India" because it matters to us.
