2,500 additional buses to ease Dashain rush

Considering the increasing flow of outbound passengers travelling to their home districts for the upcoming Dashain festival, transport entrepreneurs are bringing more buses into service. They plan to triple the number of public vehicles in the peak days.

Around 700 buses currently leave Kathmandu on a daily basis. From Ghatasthapana, the first day of the 10-day Dashain , entrepreneurs are adding around 2,500 buses to meet the demand. According to Dol Nath Khanal, general secretary of the Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs (FNTE), the additional buses will be borrowed from various routes with fewer passengers. “We are outsourcing buses from other routes nationwide and will operate them from Kathmandu during the peak days,” said Khanal. The entrepreneurs have identified the peak days from October 7-13.

Including both big and small public vehicles, the entrepreneurs say each vehicle will carry an average of 35 passengers. With this average, currently around 24,500 people are leaving Kathmandu on a daily basis, which will rise to 87,500 during the peak week. Khanal said around 1.3 million passengers are set to leave the Capital this Dashain . “Last year around 1.2 million passengers left Kathmandu, while this year will see an increase as the election is just round the corner.”

Passengers looking for instant tickets can also opt for “alternate vehicles”, which travel short routes and arrive the next day after their departure or those vehicles linking various destinations together. “We have planned maximum number of alternate vehicles, assigned with odd and even number plates for different dates, which can carry additional 25,000 to 30,000 passengers daily,” said Dharma Raj Rimal, Bagmati zonal coordinator of the FNTE.

“These tickets can be purchased on a day to day basis as the buses are available.” This year, the destinations in high demand include Dharan, Kakadvitta, Butwal

and Nepalgunj.

Also, the FNTE this time, with support from the Metropolitan Traffic Police Department (MTPD), has been actively monitoring the overpriced black tickets sold by brokers.

The FNTE has deployed 400 people to monitor ticket sales in the counters. Traffic police have also deployed personnel in civvies to monitor ticket sales.

“With this, we have been able to control the sales of black tickets, which has been a major problem in the past years.

Only the authorised personnel holding the ID cards of our institution can sell the tickets. We have witnessed negligible back ticketing this year due to stern monitoring,” said Rimal.

“Our main challenge is to actively monitor seats from October 5 so that the passengers get their allocated seats.”

Similarly, the MTPD has set the areas such as Kalanki, Old Bus Park, Gaushala, Koteshwor and Balambu will be under surveillance to see that no bus tickets are sold in the black market.

To discourage black tickets, the MTPD has set up 12 checkpoints in Jorpati, Koteshwor, Balkhu, Old Bus Park, New Bus Park, Sundhara, Airport, Swoyambhu, Nagdhunga, Gaushala, Kalanki and Satdobato in the valley.
